Why the Orangutan Appeal?
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre:
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located in the Sandakan district of Sabah, previously known as Northern Borneo. The Centre was originally established in 1964 with the aim of returning orphaned orangutans, which had been displaced by extensive logging activities, back to the wild.
The Centre is now administered by the the Sabah Governments Wildlife Department and is recognised worldwide as the most successful rehabilitation centre of its kind.
During your visit you have the opportunity to:
Meet and greet with the Appeals representative Liasion Officer on arrival at the Centre.
Be guided around the Centre by the Appeals Liasion Officer, giving you the opportunity to hear more about the individual orangutans you may see.
To enjoy an after dinner speech by the Appeals Liasion Officer giving you the inside track on the Appeals current and forthcoming projects.
The Orangutan Appeal UK are the only authorised UK representatives for Sepilok and our mission is to promote the conservation of the wild orangutan in its natural habitat, by proactively working for its conservation in Malaysia and Indonesian Borneo by supporting the rehabilitation and repatriation of orphaned or displaced orangutans into protected rainforest reserves.
The Appeal is able to support and promote awareness of the valuable work carried out by Sepilok by identifying specific needs which it then adopts as Projects. Each Project is funded and managed by the Appeal team, sourcing goods, labour and services locally wherever possible.
Projects have included the provision of a Land Rover Defender to carry out rescues, a new excercise enclosure for the young orangutans and the provision of a Malyasian vet at the Centre.
