Named the best site for wildlife tourism in the world by the BBC, the Galapagos Archipelago has also been named a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO as well a whale sanctuary. The Islands are located 600 miles west of the continent on the Equator. Part of the Cordillera de los Cocos of the Pacific Ocean there are 19 islands – 13 large and 6 small – and 42 small barren islands which jut out into the sea. This underwater mountain range is still extremely active, with 52 volcanic rocks and 2,000 craters waiting to erupt at any moment and form a new habitat.
The Galapagos Islands offer an unparalleled look at the history of evolution. This theory was, in fact, developed by Charles Darwin and presented in his book, Origin of the Species, after various visits to these islands. The Galapagos Islands are a nature lover’s paradise.
