From
the 13th to the 16th century much of the
trade in the Indian Ocean passed through
two great East African ports, Kilwa
Kisiwani and Songo Mnara.
Zanzibar's
Stone Town urban fabric is virtually
intact with buildings that reflect its
particular culture which has brought together
elements of the cultures of Africa, the
Arab region, India, and Europe.
At
5,895 metres Kili is Africa's highest
mountain. Its snowy peak looms over the
savannah and is encircled by Kilimanjaro
National Park which is home to numerous
endangered species of mammals.
A
large concentration of wild animals can
be found in the Ngorongoro Crater.
The Laitoli site boasts early hominid
footprints dating back 3.6 million years.
Large
numbers of elephants, black rhinos, cheetahs,
giraffes, hippos and crocodiles live in
Selous Game Reserve, relatively
undisturbed by human impact.
The
Serengeti's annual migration of
vast herds of herbivores followed by their
predators, is one of the worlds most impressive
natural events.
