Fossil
Hominid Sites - Caves
in the Makapan Valley feature traces of
ancient human occupation containing fossils
dating back between 4.5 and 2.5 million
years.
Greater
St Lucia Wetland Parks coral
reefs, coastal dunes, lake systems, swamps
and reed wetlands are critical habitats
for species from Africa's marine, wetland
and savannah environments.
Robben
Island
was used between the 17th and 20th centuries
as a prison, a hospital and a military
base. Its buildings witness the triumph
of democracy and freedom over oppression
and racism.
The
Drakensberg Park paintings, made
by the San people over a period of 4,000
years, represent the spiritual life of
the San people who no longer live in this
region.
Mapungubwe
was the largest kingdom in the sub-continent
before abandonment in the 14th century.
Its remains shows the development of social
and political structures over some 400
years.
Vredefort
Dome is a 2,023 million old meteorite
impact structure, which caused devastating
global change and major evolutionary changes.
The
Cape Floral Region covers 553,000
hectares and is one of the richest areas
for plants in the world. It is home
to 20% of the continent’s flora.
