Extensive poaching during the years of civil
unrest means Uganda's last rhino was spotted
in 1982.
Rhino
Fund Uganda, in collaboration with local communities
and governmental institutions for wildlife,
established a sanctuary for the breeding of
white and black rhinos.
During your visit you have the opportunity to
learn about how Ziwa aims to:
- establish the
sanctuary as a safe and secure location where
breeding of white and black rhinos can take
place as an interim step towards reintroduction
of the rhinos into Uganda's national parks.
- establish
the sanctuary as a game reserve in which other
species of wildlife can be encountered, so
as to highlight and conserve Uganda's unique
biodiversity.
- develop
an education program for the public; especially
children. Create awareness about the
plight of the rhino in Uganda and the importance
of rhino conservation.
- provide
job opportunities and an opportunity for community
involvement in a long-term conservation project
so as to prove that rhino conservation is
possible through Ugandan efforts and that
ultimately is beneficial to all.
- provide
facilities to attract tourists and visitors
and improve Uganda as a tourist destination,
integrate visitors and local communities to
their mutual benefit.
