Together with Tsavo National Park, Mkomazi Game Reserve forms one of the largest and most important ecosystems on earth.
Linked to the legendary conservationists Tony Fitzjohn and George Adamson, African Wildlife Preservation Trust works since 1989 on the front lines in the battle to save the critically endangered African black rhino.
During your visit you have the opportunity to
learn about how:
-
the black rhino has been re-introduced into Mkomazi from South Africa after heavy poaching, overgrazing, deliberate burning and illegal hunting had wiped out its black rhino populations.
rangers have been recruited, trained and equipped, and many hours are spent on anti-poaching patrols both from the air and on the ground.
- the seven black rhino live in the sanctuary which also has a waterhole and wallow for the rhinos. There is also an underground observation point.
-
the on-site plane is an integral part of the conservation work allowing Tony to monitor game movements and cattle incursions into the park.
-
Tony also manages a successful captive breeding program to save the endangered African wild dog and an Outreach Program for the residents of villages surrounding the reserve.
