The Volcanoes National Park ranks as one
of the best places in Africa to go gorilla
tracking, while also supporting a number
of other localised mammal, bird and plant
species. The park protects the Rwanda sector
of the Virunga mountains, a range of six
extinct and three active volcanoes which
straddle the border with Uganda and the Democratic
Republic of Congo.
Virunga Lodge is set on a stunning hillside.
The lodge features eight permanent en-suite
bandas with private balconies overlooking
the dramatic Virunga volcanoes and lakes.
The sumptuous meals, a mixture of western
and local African cuisine, are served in
the dining room which boasts fantastic views
of the lakes.
In the nearby park you can track the endangered
mountain gorilla and the golden monkey. Lodge
activities include birdwatching, photography
and native culture.

Gorilla's Nest is a lodge close to the Parc
National des Volcans. It is has been built
under a grove of trees with the rooms set
around a large courtyard. All of the
en-suite rooms have fabulous views of the
the eucalyptus forest, pyrethrum farms and
shambas (farms). There is a spacious restaurant
with a large bar and reception area. On a
clear day the views across to the volcanoes
and surrounding countryside are spectacular.
A traditional Rwandese homestead provides
an interesting stop-off for visitors after
Gorilla trekking.

Akagera
Game Lodge

Akagera National Park,
set at a relatively low altitude along the
Tanzanian border, protects an archetypal
African savannah landscape of tangled acacia
and brachystegia bush, interspersed with
patches of open grassland and a dozen swamp-fringed
lakes that follow the meandering course of
the Akagera River.
The refurbished Akagera Hotel reopened in
December 2003 as Akagera Game Lodge. Its
rooms and suites all contain en-suite bathrooms,
a TV and a patio overlooking Lake Ihema.
There is a central restaurant and a separate
bar / lounge, both also boasting lake views.
Lodge facilities include a restaurant, bar,
large circular swimming pool, small children's
swimming pool and tennis facilities. Game
drives, walking trails and bush barbecues
are also offered, managed by experienced
guides.

Accommodation at Sabyinyo Silverback
Lodge comprises five double cottages,
two suites and one family suite.
All are stone buildings with Rwandese
terracotta tile roofs, and feature
large sitting areas, fireplaces,
stylish en-suite bathrooms finished
with Venetian plaster a dressing
room and a sheltered veranda. Heat
exchangers in the fireplaces provide
a plentiful supply of hot water.
The family suite has a second bedroom
with en-suite bathroom and fireplace.
The lodge
is owned by a Community Trust,
SACOLA, which uses rentals and
community fees from the lodge to
drive socio-economic and conservation
initiatives in the communities
adjacent to the National Park.
